Information Letter: Field Archaeological School for Young Researchers

The Margulan Institute of Archaeology of the Committee of Science of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Shakarim University, and the Anthropology Laboratory of Nazarbayev University are organizing the International Summer Field Archaeological School "Interdisciplinary Methods in Archaeology" at the Kokentau archaeological complex (Zhanasemei district, Abay Region) from July 29 to August 7, 2025.
Eligible participants:
Senior undergraduate students, master’s and PhD students, as well as young researchers and specialists under the age of 40 are invited to participate in the School.
The program will include intensive field training, where leading experts will share their knowledge and skills in fieldwork methods and techniques. Participants will receive hands-on experience in the following areas:
- Archaeological recording methods
- Geoarchaeology
- LiDAR survey and its applications in archaeology
- Physical anthropology
- Basics of working with paleoanthropological materials in the field: recording, excavation, packaging, coding, description, and age/sex estimation of skeletal remains
- Archaeozoology
- Basics of working with osteological materials: recording, excavation, species identification, age and season of animal slaughter, and coding
Participation requirements:
Interested candidates must apply by May 31, 2025, by submitting a motivation letter and a recommendation letter from their academic advisor.
The motivation letter should explain your reasons for wishing to participate, why you believe you should be selected, what areas of archaeology interest you most, your expectations, and what benefits you hope to gain from this experience.

Participation conditions:
Participation in the Summer School is free of charge, including accommodation and meals. Participants are only responsible for covering their travel expenses to and from the city of Semey.
